On this day in 1889 fifty thousand people lined up for a chance to get free unoccupied land in Oklahoma. At high noon a gun was fired and the land grabbers took off in a wild frenzy for the free land. Six counties were formed from the two million acres of open land. At noon the population of Guthrie, Ok., was zero but by that evening the town's population was 10,000.
