In April 1995 the Grateful Dead played a two-night set at the Jefferson Civic Center Coliseum in Birmingham, Ala. 1995 would be the last year for the band to play. In August of that year founding band member Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack at age 53 in Forest Knolls, California. The band formed in the late 1960's during the counter-culture hippie movement. They pretty much toured nonstop from that time until Garcia's death in 95. The Grateful Dead was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. And as a note of interest it was exactly a year after the Birmingham show that band member Bob Weir and Garcia's widow Deborah Koons committed half of Garcia's ashes into the Ganges River at Rishikesh, India. Enjoy a slideshow of photos below from the Grateful Dead's April 5, 1995 visit to Birmingham.
