On this date in 1818 the United States Congress enacted the Flag Act of 1818. The act called for the U.S. flag to have 13 stripes to represent the original 13 colonies. The act also called for one star to be added to the flag for each state admitted to the Union. The changes would take effect on the next fourth of July after the state was admitted. Enjoy the little GIF below that I created. It shows how the flag changed through the years as each new state was added.
