John Wathen, is celebrating ten years as the Hurricane Creekkeeper. He is seen here in 1999 with two-time Pulitzer Prize winner E. O. Wilson at Hurricane Creek in Tuscaloosa County, Ala. As a creekkeeper Wathen patrols the watershed and collects evidence and information about the water quality. As a watchdog for the environment beyond Hurricane Creek Wathen brought to attention the true scope of the 2010 BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Wathen flew over the site many times documenting the vast scope of the disaster. Wathen was interviewed by multiple media outlets where he relayed the true scale of the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry that was being downplayed by BP officials. Here's to 10 years of John defending the environment and stepping into places few others will.
