In his diary Bremer revealed that he shot Wallace not from any political reasons but for a desire for fame. Wallace later wrote a letter to Bremer forgiving him. Wallace was reelected governor of Alabama in 1983 through large support of Alabama’s Black voters. Wallace died in 1998.
