On this day in 1861 the state of Alabama sent militia units to seize Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines that guarded the mouth of Mobile Bay. The state also sent troops to seize the Mount Vernon Arsenal located in north Mobile County. The state was preparing to secede from the Union after Abraham Lincoln was elected president the previous November. One week after the forts were seized the Alabama Secession Convention passed the Ordinance of Secession by a vote of 61-39 declaring Alabama a "Sovereign and Independent State." On January 11, 1861 Alabama became the fourth state to secede from the Union.
